What Is Kama Sutra?

          The Kama Sutra is most famous today to most people as a collection of drawings of sexual positions that at times seem to defy the very limitations of the human body. While the Kama Sutra is indeed a sexual playbook of sorts, the emphasis is on the science and the art of sexuality rather than being a simple how-to manual.

          The Kama Sutra is a classic work of literature that was written over 1,500 years ago by Maharshi Vatsyayana, who was a sage in India. The period during which the Kama Sutra was written occurred during the Gupta dynasty, which was a kind of renaissance in Indian history. The work was inspired by Indian scriptures that date even farther back in time, including the most sacred texts in Indian history, the Vedas

Significance

          The method by which the Kama Sutra exists as more a work of philosophy than a sex manual is related to the fact that the scared text of the Vedas situate a system of purpose for human life. The four purposes of the life are "dharm," or duty; "artha" or wealth, "kama" or pleasure; and "moksha" in which the soul becomes liberated from the body. When reading the Kama Sutra, it is vital to understand that sexual pleasure is placed among the most important purposes of life.

          The Kama Sutra provides a scientific framework for how to make love. Contained within the work are 64 different and unique was to make love. The art of eroticism contained within the Kama Sutra is known as Panchali. If a woman is capable of of becoming a master at all 64 sexual practices, she achieves the title "ganika," which roughly translates into courtesan. As might be expected, a ganika is highly prized and sought after by men, including kings.

         The Kama Sutra identifies eight different approaches to achieving sexual pleasure: embracing, kissing, scratching each other with the fingernails, biting, caressing, reversed coitus and oral sex. In addition, there are three separate methods of kissing conducted by the female: the somewhat chaste limited kiss,the passionate throbbing kiss and the deeply probing kiss. Five different methods of kissing by the male are outlined: the straight kiss, the oblique kiss, the evolving kiss, the pressed kiss and the hard-pressed kiss.
